🔔 Important Update for Berkey Customers
I recently spoke with a customer asking if I knew where to buy replacement Berkey filters. Knowing there were issues going on with Berkey, I wasn’t sure—so I looked into it.
Here’s what I found, and I’m sharing it with all of you:
In early 2023, the EPA issued a Stop Sale, Use, or Removal Order against Berkey. This was due to alleged violations of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA)—specifically regarding:
The use of antimicrobial silver in their filters, and
Their unverified contaminant reduction claims.
As a result, Berkey has been unable to produce or sell its Black Berkey filters since that time.
Berkey challenged the EPA in court, but their case was dismissed. They then petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene. As of now (mid-2025), the Supreme Court has declined to hear the case.

🤔 So What Does This Mean for Berkey Users?
At this point, no one can say for sure. Berkey hasn’t resumed filter production or sales. It’s unclear whether they plan to:
Reformulate their filters without silver, or
Challenge the EPA again in a different way.
If they do remove the silver, it raises the question:
What will set them apart from more affordable filters like Brita or PUR?
Also worth noting—Berkey filters are not NSF/ANSI/WQA certified, which is something many consumers aren’t aware of.
